Fashion and music go together like wet paint and a dry canvas with music being the paint and fashion being the canvas. As music videos have become increasingly more ingrained in our daily lives it is easy to see how music artists paint the new fashion trends each season. Therefore, the style of clothes an artist wears is very important just ask Aurelia Blossom the half Fijian and half German singer whose voice is as smooth as a silk dress. We met Aurelia while searching models for our spring fashion show in Koln, Germany. We instantly fell in love with her after seeing her portfolio which was filled with pin-up style shots. In addition, we loved that Aurelia was Fijian and German because we like to celebrate multicultural diversity in the modeling industry and wanted to present this in our show as well. So when I got the opportunity to sit with Aurelia I asked her all about her music and fashion style and here’s what she had to say:
AB: How would you describe your music style?
Aurelia: My style is a mixture of jazz, swing, blues, soul and funk music. I take old school sounding elements of the 1940s and 50s jazz and mix them up with contemporary pop elements to give the whole thing a more modern sound. My lyrics and melodies are smooth and soulful and all based on my experiences, so they are very personal and from the heart. I chose a sound and style that fits to me, that I can feel and represent a 100%. But I understand at the same that jazz is a difficult genre to come out with in this day and age. I feel that its my mission to bring jazz back with a modern sound. I want to make my music appealing to a mainstream crowd, not just people who listen to that music anyway.
AB: Would you say your style of dress compliments your music style?
Aurelia: I like bright colors because I feel it compliments my positive energy and creativity, but then sometimes I also like to play it safe and dress plain with basic colors that compliment each other. Some days I like to dress up with makeup and high heels and other days I like to dress casual and just put my hair up in a ponytail — it all depends on my mood. I think my overall different dress styles reflect my spontaneity, my versatile and flexible personality.
AB: What are your favorite clothes to perform in and why? (dresses, pants, skirts)
Aurelia: I definitely like to get dressed up to perform, wear a pretty dress and heels and often an accessory hairpiece like a flower or something to get people’s attention. People come not just to hear your music but also to SEE you so you have to give them something nice look at. That is why I like to get dressed up for my performances. It also makes me feel more confident — when I look nice, I feel nice.
AB: Where do you get your style inspiration from?
Aurelia: It’s hard to say where I get my inspiration from. My sister has a pretty good fashion sense so I often go to her for advice. I am a big fan of the pin-up style and I love stripes and polka dot patterns, so I like dressing up in that style and not just for my photo shoots. I like to go for looks that I feel are cute and fashionable but at the same time classy and elegant.
AB: What image do you try to portray to your fans through your choice of fashion and through your music lyrics?
Aurelia: The lyrics in music are fun, flirtatious and a bit sassy at time. I like to give the image of a playful, down-to-earth yet confident and self-composed girl. My dress style compliments this as I like to look cute and classy at times but also sexy and a little more revealing at other times. The most important thing for my fashion choice is whatever direction I choose to go, that I can maintain my integrity as a person and that I portray myself in my music, lyrics, and fashion as ME and who I am.
AB: Thanks Aurelia! And again it is a pleasure to speak with you once again. I am a huge fan of your music and wish you both success with your music and modeling careers as well.
